TWO IDEAS FOR HELPING MILLENNIALS CHOOSE A POTENTIAL EMPLOYER
Melissa Blazejak, an editor with HR Daily Advisor, has published a most informative article on hiring millennials. I like what she says, and it rings true as she is herself a millennial. I have been employing people for decades, and know there’s always something to learn.
Melissa bases her points on a recent Spark Hire webinar about hiring strategies to attract millennials. Here are two that I found most interesting, along with my comments.
1. Using text messaging.
Meilssa:
“For Tolan, his company had to switch over to text messaging vs. standard phone calls. Tolan offered this advice to the audience: Get a pulse on what your messages should say by polling your current staff. Focus on what’s important to them, and then build that into your outreach efforts. He added that third-party validation is critical and that most Millennials make their decisions based on social proof.”
My comment:
I think text messaging is an excellent way to exchange information. However, it restricts the ability to express emotion and get a feel for someone. Basic chemistry is essential to a business relationship as much as it is vital to a personal relationship. Standard phone calls are needed to confirm you have a connection with a potential applicant.
2. Highlighting career path and social responsibility.
Melissa:
“Rand’s company focuses on highlighting the learning and development opportunities, as this appeals to the Millennial generation more so than previous age groups. Rand suggested highlighting how a candidate can grow and develop with your company during the interview process and communicating how your company serves a greater purpose to the community, as corporate responsibility is becoming even more important to the Millennial generation.”
My comment:
No doubt employees are an employer’s most important investment. The longer an employee stays with you and continues to make a valuable contribution, the higher your return on your investment in them. Turnover is also enormously costly, so cultivating loyalty and commitment among your workforce is a key way to keep costs under control.
With regard to social responsibility, it should be mentioned that for generations, business owners have made it a priority to give back to the community. Organizations ranging from the Chamber of Commerce to the Kiwanis Club have been providing money, labor, and professional services for free around the world.
