Be Like Water
As a BaGua Kung Fu practitioner, I take heart from the wisdom of the masters who came before me, and who teach me to this day. Bruce Lee is one of them.
Bruce was an expert at applying the principles of martial arts to everyday life. That is the ultimate purpose of this training – to help you become a more effective person outside of the Dojong or Dojo.
His analogy of “be like water” is most relevent in times of great turmoil, like today. When people are burning with anxiety and fear, be like water to them. Help them set limits. Cool off. Find a point of calm.
Like water to fire.
This will help them do business with you. And help them function much better amidst the tumult.
=====
“Be like water making its way through cracks. Do not be assertive, but adjust to the object, and you shall find a way around or through it. If nothing within you stays rigid, outward things will disclose themselves.
Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.”
